The Fantomas Detective Novels were hugely popular crime stories, published in France in the early C20th. Fantomas is a vicious master-criminal (a thief, but also a killer), pursued by his nemesis, Inspector Juve, through some 32 novels by the Souvestre and Allain. The binding looks like a library one, but apart from the number 98 at the foot of the spine there are no indications of library ownership: no tsamps, no labels, no pockets etc. A few light marks on boards, some light foxing, very good. Braddon's lurid penny-dreadful serials for the Halfpenny Journal (in which it appeared as The Banker's Secret), repackaged for middle-class consumption. The villainous banker of the title is happy to commit any crime to gain £20,000. View more info
