Third Edition: Hutchinson & Co., 1897. Original fine-ribbed scarlet cloth, lettered in steel-grey on front board, in gilt on spine; green-and-white leaf-patterned endpapers. Lightly scuffed, bookplate and signature (1897) on front pastedown, otherwise very good. A novel written -- like Charles Reade's It is Never Too Late to Mend (to which it was favourably compared) -- to expose the cruelty of prison life; although in this case, specifically military prison life. Jay's pseudonym and choice of subject matter fooled the reviewers into thinking she was a male writer.
