Inspector of Prisons from 1878 to 1896, and had a lifelong interest in crime and criminology. The stories in this volume are based on his own experiences: "Moving episodes in town and country; gaol outbreaks, affrays, assaults; escapes that have succeeded or failed; sentences borne by the wrong people; great frauds that failed; wild schemes of vengeance for wrongs real or fancied; restitution made unsought and unexpected; instances of faith and self-sacrifice expected by poor souls sunk deep in crime".
