Three volumes in original blue cloth, with blindstamped designs on boards, lettered in gilt on spine; yellow endpapers. Condition varies. Volume I has a heavy circular ring mark on front boards which has discoloured and wrinkled the cloth: the front free endpaper has been removed, thus only fair/poor. Volume II is scuffed on corners and have some cracking to inner joint papers, but are otherwise clean and tight, thus good/very good. Volume III as volume II but with some cracking to cloth on front hinge and cracking to paper on inner joints, fair. As with the copies held by Sadleir & Wolff , there is a half-title in Volume II only. Fitzgerald was a friend of John Forster, and through him became acquainted with the Charles Dickens and the circle of young writers around him, and then became a contributor to both Household Words and All the Year Round. He wrote numerous works of history and biography, and books on Dickens. His novels are all quite uncommon. With all faults.
