Original blindstamped green cloth; yellow endpapers. Errata slip tipped in after title page. Extremities scuffed, undated name on title page, good. Inscription on front free endpaper reads "Thomas [illegible] Ayton with the author's kind regards". Author's printed Notice reads "If too deep a tinge of melancholy should seem to pervade any of these pages, be it known to the sympathizing reader, that they are written in a season of suffering and affliction, and that they are the outgoings of a wounded and downcrushed spirit". Added below, in pencil (presumably by the author himself): "but although such is the case the reader will no doubt find something both amusing and instructive in these pages". The collection of stories is grimly humorous.
