Frontispiece. Original blindstamped maroon cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; cream endpapers. Cloth a little darkened on boards, with a few light marks; faint signature (1871) on front free endpaper; some foxing, good. The title novel (177 pp) is a sub-Dickensian story of low and high life, owing something of its plot (a lost child working with criminals) to Oliver Twist. The volume also contains 4 linked stories (In Prison Under Robespierre, Burgomaster Law in Prussia, In the South Seas & Down the Danube) relating a life of adventure; a poem - The Ballad of the Magic Viol; and 7 other miscellaneous stories: An Essay on Wooden Legs, The Head of My Profession, John Singer's Story, A Reminiscence of Field Lane, Benighted on Salisbury Plain, Upon the Parish, In the Bristol Channel.
