Original fine-ribbed red cloth, lettered in gilt. A little rubbed/frayed on spine ends, small dents on leading edges of boards, a few specks and spots on cloth, mark at foot of spine, otherwise clean and tight: good. A social reformer with Chartist sympathies has the chance of sudden riches. Despite its title, the novel is set not in the Indian Ocean, but in Scotland, in and around Maclaren's native Aberdeen. The author regarded it as one of his best (and most serious) novels. Scarce.
