The Children of Endurance Being the Story of a Latter-Day Prophet (1904)

By: Cleeve, Lucas [ie Adeline Kingscote]

Price: £45.00

Quantity: 1 available

Book Condition: Very Good

Title page printed in red and black. Original red cloth with blindstamped leaf design on front board, lettered in gilt. Spine a trifle dulled/darkened, foxing (heavy on early pages), very good. Kingscote/Cleeve gained some sensational notoriety by being declared bankrupt in 1899; she apparently left her husband and moved to Switzerland, where she spent the last years of her life writing furiously, producing as many as 8 books per year. She favoured "strong" subjects (ie sexual or religious). The Children of Endurance concerns a new Jewish prophet who heads to Palestine to declare his new "truth". Scarce.
