Philip Ryland, sole living representative of an old Grasshire family, tainted with insanity for generations, disappears from England at the age of twenty-one, turning up in San Francisco eight or nine years later as the husband of a Spanish girl of low origin, earning her living by nightly singing and dancing at a disreputable saloon in that not too reputable city. . .
