Undated first edition [1900]. Original maroon cloth, lettered in gilt. Lightly scuffed, endpapers browned, signature on front free endpaper (1901), light foxing, good. Agnus/Higginbotham was a follower of Thomas Hardy, writing novels set in "Wessex" (Dorset and the South West), but generally less pessimistic in outlook. "Mr Orme Agnus dares to tread in Mr Hardy's footsteps, but with this difference, that his work is lighter, more laughable, less subjective" (The Morning Leader). Jan Oxber contains the title novel and four shorter pieces, set in "Barleigh" in Wessex.

Unlike Agnus's rural fiction, The Prime Minister is a sensational novel of crime, love and politics set in Westminster and beyond. Hrolf Calladen, the Prime Minister in question, murders a blackmailer who is threatening to reveal his bigamy.
