Publisher's catalogue dated September 1900 bound in at end. A novel partly set in South Africa during the Boer War.

Original deep crimson cloth, lettered in gilt and decorated in black. Spine sunned to pink, nick to cloth at head of spine, a few pages have lightly wrinkled edges, a little foxing, good. Baker spent much of her life in New Zealand and used it (as here) as a setting for her fiction -- all of which is now uncommon. Sutherland describes her novels as "grim".
