London Macmillan & Co. 1916 Hardcover Good Good Book
Popular Edition, 1899 - 1916. Ten volumes uniformly bound in beaded blue cloth with blindstamped decorative bands head and foot, author's initials in gilt on front boards. Light scuffing, a little foxing, signatures (mostly 1935) on front free endpapers, some title lettering on spines dulled, otherwise a very good collection. A collection of ten of Carey's (more than forty) novels, in a uniform binding, including a number of her later, scarcer titles. Her mild, domestic novels were widely popular, although critics scorned her characters as being without "a single redeeming vice". For some years it was believed that Carey was also the unlikely author of a number of lurid thrillers written under the pseudonym Le Voleur -- a view that is now generally discredited. A very heavy 10 volume set which will require additional postage/delivery costs. I can offer competitive rates ffor delivery by courier.

London Ward, Lock & Co. 1900 Hardcover Good Book Various
New Editions: Ward, Lock & Bowden/Ward, Lock & Co, 1895 - c1900. Brief biographical introduction in first volume. All volumes have a frontispiece: some have other illustrations in text. Twelve volumes on original fine-ribbed red cloth, with twig-and-leaf decorations and lettering in gilt. Cloth lightly sunned on spine, light scuffing, one volume rubbed at foot of spine, bookplates in six volumes, otherwise a clean, tight set, good to very good. Henry was the younger brother of novelist Charles Kingsley. His early and most successful novels reflect his globetrotting experiences (particularly in Australia); his later novels tend to show the effects of his advancing alcoholism. He died, aged only 46, in 1876. This is a mixed but complete set of the Ward Lock issue: six volumes are dated (Ward, Lock & Bowden, 1895-96), and six are from a slightly later undated reprint (Ward, Lock & Co, c1900). The binding is the same, but the later volumes have slightly smaller casings, and the cloth is slightly darker red. The earlier volumes are largely unopened/unread; the later volumes have bookplates. A heavy set which will require additional postage. I can offer competitive rates for delivery by courier.
