Reprint. Coloured frontispiece and illustrated title page; monochrome plates. Original red cloth, lettered and decorated in black and gilt; yellow endpapers. Light scuffing, light foxing, some faint staining on endpapers, inscription (1909) on front free endpaper, otherwise very good. Reid wrote numerous adventure stories for boys, with exotic far flung locations: but here he introduces boys to exotic members of the animal kingdom: from monkeys, beavers and elephants to giraffes, antelopes and armadillos.

Undated, c1890. Illustrated. Original green cloth with elaborate decorations in black and red, lettered in gilt; pale yellow endpapers. Minimal scuffing, sunned on bottom edge of rear board, undated signature on front free endpaper, otherwise very good. First published as a two-decker in 1866. "The first pulp Western in England. . . the props of the western genre . . . the Comanche attack, the saloon brawl, the mainstreet shoot-out, sunset on the mesquite, virtuosity with the lasso, bowie-knife and six-gun are all found here" (Victorian Fiction). Plus, of course, the supernatural element supplied with the ghostly figure of the title. Surprisingly uncommon.
