Undated, c1888. Original royal blue cloth lettered and illustrated (two men in a sword fight, facing each other astride a large cannon) in black and gilt; black endpapers. Corners scuffed, leading edge of front endpaper trimmed off, otherwise very good. Originally serialised, under a different title, in Hogg's Instructor in the 1850s. The novel -- aimed at both older boy and adult readers -- was published in book form in 1884. This copy has the publisher's announcements for 1888 - 9 at the end, which may indicate that it is an early reprint, or simply a late issue of the first (and perhaps only) edition. Scarce. Wolff held one title by Meadows, but not Maurice Drummore.
