One of the best of Black's later novels: dour religiosity and conniving relatives are outfaced by young love: set in and around Fort William and Glen Nevis.

In this "revised" edition The Marriage of Moira Fergus has been replaced by another long story, The Pupil of Aurelius, and the addendum dropped altogether. Uncommon in any edition.
