Contains: A Life's Secret by Mrs Henry WOOD1. Complete serialisation. Illustrated. Captain Stauncy's Vow [by A. M. HEAVEN?]. A novel partly set on Lundy Island. Ledesdale Grange by Miss VANCE. Also 3 other serials by anonymous writers: My Adventures in the Far West, The Forged Will & The Rival Heirs. Mid C19th black leather over charcoal grey boards; raised bands with gilt tooling and black leather title label on spine; red marbled endpapers. A few light marks, a little foxing, otherwise good. Mrs Wood's novel was not published in volume form in England until 1867. The texts of the two versions vary considerably at almost every point: the book version being much expanded and re-written. On pp 334-5 is a short article, (containing a lengthy quotation from John Stuart Mill) defending Mrs Wood's hostile depiction of the Trade Union movement in the novel. The authors of the second two novels are identified in: Lundy Island A Bibliography by A. Holbrook; and A Critical Dictionary of English Literature by S. A. Allibone, respectively. A heavy volume which may require additional postage.
