Original blindstamped pink cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; yellow endpapers. Corners bumped, spine sunned, small nick to cloth on lower hinge, remains of bookplate on front pastedown, good. Adrian -- the oldest son of a noble family -- is just about to marry the sensible Catherine, when he decides to run off and rescue his old love Lilian -- who has been deserted, orphaned and driven insane by the machinations of a villain. The consequences are (of course) disastrous for all concerned.

A romance, set largely in the Western Highlands, and issued by a Scottish publisher. The unknown author produced at least two further novels: Love and Duty (1866) and Arthur Clifford (1869).

A collection of 9 short stories, with varying settings (Deptford, Blackheath, Cornwall, France), giving few clues to the identity of the writer(s): Mad Collins, Sally Grey, Isidore, Practical Jokes, Master and Man, The Wrecker's Daughter, The Rejected Lover, The Fair Day, A Workhouse Man's Tale.
