Trilby (1894), Du Maurier, George
20 Du Maurier, George Trilby (1894)
London Osgood, McIlvaine & Co 1894 Hardcover Fair Book
"Fourth" Edition in Three Volumes. Three volumes in original beige cloth, lettered and illustrated in blue on front boards and spines. Ancient repair to cloth along lower hinge on Volume I, cloth starting to split along lower hinge of Volume II. Spines a trifle darkened, free corners rubbed, small chips on spine ends, traces of W. H. Smith's labels on front pastedowns, light cracking of inner joint papers (all joints tight), light foxing: thus only a fair set. A sensational story of music and hypnotism. Binding/collation the same as for the first edition. Sadleir [1675] opines that the seven -- supposedly separate -- three-decker editions published in 1894 are in fact one single edition and part of the publisher's plan to "whip up" sales of the book. In support of this theory it is noticeable that the undated publisher's catalogue makes no mention at all of the book (by the fourth edition one might expect some reviews). Whatever the case, the three-decker edition(s) predate the illustrated one-volume edition in navy blue cloth (published in 1895) which is frequently misrepresented as the first, because of its lack of any edition statement at all. A heavy three-volume set which will require additional postage.
