Uncollected Ghost Story: The De Grabrooke Monument, Riddell, Mrs J. H. [ie Charlotte Riddell]
16 Riddell, Mrs J. H. [ie Charlotte Riddell] Uncollected Ghost Story: The De Grabrooke Monument
London George Routledge 1880 No Binding Good Book
The De Grabrooke Monument. With 5 illustrations by William Small. 15 pp, in double columns + volume title page (in colour) and contents page. (17 pages in total). SCANNED COPY of story originally published in ROUTLEDGE'S EVERY GIRL'S ANNUAL for 1880, edited by Alicia A Leith. The De Grabrooke Monument is an uncollected and unrecognised ghost story by one of the nineteenth century's most admired practitioners of the form. The story does not appear in any of the collections (ancient or modern), nor can I find any bibliographical reference to it. The story is narrated by Patty who, as a child gets locked alone overnight in Oldstone Cathedral, where she sees the ghosts of the De Grabrooke family gather at the family monument, to expose a murder: "Slowly the dead youth bared his heart, and drawing it open ... disclosed a sharp, long weapon, fine as a needle, fatal as the cruellest sword, which penetrated it through and through." Please note: this is a scanned copy, printed on demand, not the original book. It can be delivered as a printed document by post (postage applies) or by email as a PDF file (post free).
