The Phaeton or Queen Tita Novels [The Strange Adventures of a Phaeton (1872), Green Pastures and Piccadilly (1877), White Wings (1880), The Strange Adventures of a Houseboat (1888), Wolfenberg (1892)], Black, William
2 Black, William The Phaeton or Queen Tita Novels [The Strange Adventures of a Phaeton (1872), Green Pastures and Piccadilly (1877), White Wings (1880), The Strange Adventures of a Houseboat (1888), Wolfenberg (1892)]
London Sampson Low, Marston & Co. 1893 Hardcover Good Book ~
New & Revised Editions. Five volumes uniformly bound in dark green cloth, lettered in gilt on spines, Black's signature blindstamped on front boards. Some scuffing, a few light marks, some foxing (mostly on prelims): a good set. Black had a great success with Strange Adventures of a Phaeton in 1872. The story is told by an unnamed narrator who, with his wife (referred to only by the nickname "Queen Tita") and a couple of younger friends, travel from Surrey to Scotland in an old open horse-drawn coach, visiting country towns, admiring views, bickering, flirting etc. The sequels all have the same narrator and wife as principal characters: their holidays take them to the American mid-West (Green Pastures); the Hebrides on a yachting trip (White Wings); on the waterways of Southern England (Houseboat); and by steamer across the Mediterranean and Black Seas (Wolfenberg). Throughout the five novels the reader never learns the name of either of the two main characters (a considerable narrative feat in itself). A heavy set which will require additional postage/shipping.

Doctor Oliver's Maid by SILVERPEN [ie Eliza METEYARD]. Complete serialisation. Harry Coverdale's Courtship and All That Came of It by Frank SMEDLEY. Continuation of intermittent serialisation. Articles and short stories include My Work and a Decorator, The Footsteps of Pitying Children, Three Junes at Chauncy Manor & The Stewpan at Aldershott by SILVERPEN, Our Street & A Queer World by Edmund YATES, Adventures Beyond the Arctic Circle & A Midnight Adventure on the North Cape of Lapland by William HURTON. Light edgewear, a little foxing, very good. I can find no trace of book publication of Tierney's The Adventurer, which deals with life and adventures in the Ottoman Empire.
