Original deep maroon cloth, lettered in gilt on spine. Lightly scuffed, front inner joint paper cracked (but joint tight), foxing spots, undated signature, good. The Fantomas Detective Novels were hugely popular crime stories, published in France in the early C20th. Fantomas is a vicious master-criminal (a thief, but also a killer), pursued by his nemesis, Inspector Juve, through some 32 novels by the Souvestre and Allain. And then in a further 11 by Allain alone (of which this title is one), after his collaborator's death). English editions are uncommon.

A little browning on endpapers, otherwise a clean, tight copy: very good. A wild thriller, originally published by Tit-Bits, which won a £1,000 prize for the best novel in 1891.

Allen died with the book unfinished, and the last two episodes were written (from the author's notes) by Arthur Conan Doyle. Hilda Wade is an episodic crime story.

First Edition, late issue. Undated [1911]. Original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine. Spine and board edges sunned, light rubbing to hinges, undated signature on front free endpaper, good. Lavie, a plucky American heiress, is in London to be introduced to English Society by Lady Loamington. However, her new life turns out to be one of adventure: the episodic novel follows her "activities" which include crime and detective work. Publisher's catalogue for October 1912 bound in at end. Listed in Hubin's Crime Fiction. Armiger Barclay was of Polish descent: his wife (born Marguerite Jarvis) went through a list of pseudonyms including Olive Sandys and Countess Barcynska, and wrote around 150 novels.
